DO ABORTED BABIES MAKE IT TO HEAVEN?

Are the souls of aborted babies in Heaven like the Holy Innocents that Herod slaughtered in and around Bethlehem 2,000 years ago?

We honor the Holy Innocents as martyred saints who gave their lives and their witness to Jesus Christ without any choice on their part. They were baptized in their own blood. Their feast day on the church calendar is December 28.

There is nothing certain from revelation about the souls of aborted babies, since they were not baptized with water.

Baptism is necessary for salvation: "Unless a man be born again of water and the Holy Spirit he cannot enter the Kingdom of Heaven." This uncertainty has led some to admit the possibility of the existence of a place of complete natural happiness, called Limbo. Since the babies had no personal sin, they do not deserve to be punished.

But, do they have a chance for Heaven?

Saint Thomas Aquinas proposed his illumination theory as a possible explanation for the destiny of these little ones who have only original sin, the sin of our first parents, Adam and Eve. Saint Thomas speculates that the intellects of these babies would be enlightened so that they could chose God and His Holy will and thereby be saved; that is, get to Heaven. But what might predispose them to accept or to reject God? That question goes unanswered. We just do not know.

I have heard a very prominent Catholic TV personality suggest that each of these aborted babies would be saved in virtue of the subsequent conversion of their mother. But, how about those mothers who refuse to repent? Would their babies be deprived of heaven forever? That hardly seems fair!

This uncertainty has suggested an insane opinion from those who have abortions or for those who perform abortions. To justify their immoral activities they argue that they are merely dispatching these little ones to Heaven, or least to a state of unending natural happiness. They are producing not just victims but martyrs, preserving the slain from the horrors of life in this vale of tears. The suffering the murderers inflict is momentary, very little pain compared to the prolonged agonies of those who survive in this world to adulthood.

This type of rationalization is specious. Acting on that premise to try to protect persons from suffering by taking them out of this world is still murder. It is an attempt to justify a goal or end by immoral means. This approach to life and death gives no glory to God because it violates His commandment: "Thou shalt not kill!"

Beware of those who come up with half --truths! They will be dangerous to some because they can lead astray especially those who are emotionally involved and thereby blinded from seeing clearly the objective truth.

Abortion is a tragedy even if the babies get to Heaven.

Prayer Warriors

The example of those who are praying outside of abortion clinics all around the country is edifying. Have you heard of their success? They are making a difference. The following is an example of one story out of many. This is from our local (Reno) 40 Days for Life campaign.

We have another “SAVE” while Our Lady of the Snows covered today’s vigil!

Donna reports that this morning a Hispanic couple drove into the abortion site. Shortly after they parked the husband walked out to our prayer warriors. He wanted to explain that this abortion was necessary because his wife of 19 years had had an affair, there was no question that the child wasn’t his and that he just couldn’t emotionally or financially take on raising another child, especially if the child, by being tall, blond haired and blue eyed, was a daily reminder of her infidelity.

Merrie told him that Satan was surely rejoicing over the circumstances that led to his broken marriage, broken family and to the death of this child. After further discussion with Merrie, Carol and the other prayer warriors present which included earnest urgings not to punish the innocent child with death and reminding the distraught husband that there are loving families ready to adopt the child, he expressed the wish to talk with a Spanish-speaking priest. An urgent call to Little Flower parish was quickly made but no priest was available so Sister Carol (who was already on her way to the abortion site) was contacted and she was able to put this man in touch with Spanish speaking Sister Carmen.

The man and his wife immediately drove out of the abortion site. We learned later that they have an appointment Tuesday with Sister Carmen.

Glory to God that this child was not aborted today!

Please pray for this man, his wife, the child and all those who are touched by the pain created in this truly difficult situation. Pray that if it be God’s will for this child to be adopted that a wonderful loving family is found.

What would have happened if no one had been there today?

Lord God, Author of Life and Source of Eternal Life,

Move the hearts of all our public officials and especially our President, to fulfill their responsibilities worthily and well to all those entrusted to their care.

Help them in their special leadership roles, to extend the mantle of protection to the most vulnerable, especially the defenseless unborn, whose lives are threatened with extermination by an indifferent society.

Guide all public officials by your wisdom and grace to cease supporting any law that fails to protect the fundamental good that is human life itself, which is a gift from God and parents.

You are the Protector and Defender of the lives of the innocent unborn. Change the hearts of those who compromise the call to protect and defend life. Bring our nation to the values that have made us a great nation, a society that upholds the values of life, liberty, and the pursuit of happiness for all.

Mary, the Mother of the living, help us to bear witness to the Gospel of Life with our lives and our laws, through Christ, Our Lord.

Amen.
